Why OakWise Therapy?

The name Oakwise Therapy was born during a quiet lunch break walk through the beautiful Sydney Botanic Garden with a dear colleague. Surrounded by towering trees and soft afternoon light, our conversation drifted (as it often does between therapists) to the profound resilience held within the stories of the people we work with.
As we walked, we found ourselves reflecting on how many of our clients remind us of oak trees. An oak tree stands tall and steady. It weathers storms, bends in strong winds, survives harsh seasons, and continues to grow year after year. Yet what we see above the ground is only part of its story. Beneath the surface lies a vast, intricate root system—deep, layered, and largely unseen.
In many ways, this mirrors the human experience. Each person carries a rich and complex story. Often, when someone begins therapy, the parts of their story that feel loudest are the chapters shaped by pain, trauma, loss, anxiety, or self-doubt. These experiences can begin to dominate the narrative, sometimes making it feel as though struggle is the whole story. But it is never the whole story. Like the roots of an oak tree, beneath the visible struggles lie strength, survival, values, culture, relationships, hopes, and hard-earned wisdom. There are chapters of courage. Moments of resistance. Acts of love. Skills developed in adversity. These parts of your story matter deeply.
In our work together, we gently explore the roots to understand how they have shaped you. We make space to name the storms you have weathered. We look at the ways problems may have tried to take centre stage, and we begin to separate you from the problems themselves. You are not the anxiety. You are not the trauma. You are not the depression. These are experiences that have interacted with your story—but they do not define it. Together, we can strengthen the preferred story of who you are: your resilience, your values, your hopes for your life. We trace moments of strength that may have been overlooked. We nurture the parts of you that have always known how to endure, adapt, and grow.
The word “Wise” reflects a core belief of narrative practice that people are the experts in their own lives. You already hold knowledge about what matters to you. You already carry wisdom shaped by your lived experience. My role is not to “fix” or rewrite your story, but to walk alongside you as you reconnect with your strength, deepen your self-understanding, and step into the chapters you want to write next. Oakwise Therapy is grounded in the Narrative therapy core beliefs:

You are not your problems.

Your story is multi-layered and meaningful.

Your roots run deep, and growth even after the fiercest storms is always possible.
